Henry S. Schmidt is engaged in general merchandising at Victoria. He is a native of Prussia, Germany, and was born April 24, 1824. His father was John Schmidt, now deceased, who was also a native of Prussia. Henry S. Schmidt immigrated to this country in 1845, and first located in New York City, where he remained about two years; he then went to Luzerne County, Penn., from there to Kalamazoo, Mich., and in 1854 he settled in Chicago, where he reamined but one year. In 1858 he removed to St. Louis, and from there, in 1862, went to California, where he was engaged in mercantile business until 1887, when he located in Victoria, Jefferson Co., Mo., and established his present business. He carries a general stock of merchandise, and as a result of reasonable prices he is enjoying a large and growing trade. In 1852 he married Jennie Thomason; and of the seven children born to their union but three are living, viz.: Thomas, Harris and Rosa. Mr. Schmidt is a member of the Masonic fraternity and of the I. O. O. F.
