"Picturing Our Past" Photo Contest

Are you a photography enthusiast with a passion for the past? Jefferson County Historical Society is seeking your submissions for our photo contest!  Winning photos from our contest will be featured in a 2018 calendar commemorating our 200th year as a county.



Photos must be the work of the entrant and have been taken in Jefferson County, Missouri. Photos must be in color (no black and white) and may be minimally adjusted for contrast, sharpness, or removal of dust spots, but should not be otherwise manipulated to create an image that would not occur in reality. Photos should be taken in "landscape" mode. (wide vs. narrow)

Scenic photos will be considered but weight will be given to those of an historical nature. Possible subject matter: Historic farms, monuments, memorials, trains, tractors, ruins, abandoned buildings and structures such as barns, bridges, churches, houses, and other public structures. Photos of people and pets will not be considered.

Entry Instructions:

Up to 3 entries may be submitted per photographer. Entries must be submitted electronically by emailing individual images to Paper mail entries will not be considered. Please send one image per email with your name as the subject line. If submitting multiple photos, include the number (1,2 or 3) along with your name in the subject line. In the body of each email, include your name, address, phone number, email, image title, and location at which the image was taken.

Digital images must be formatted as JPEGs, 300 dpi or higher. Each must be at least 2 and no more than 5 MB in size. Include your name in the filename for each photo.

Judging will be based on overall clarity and technical quality with attention to composition color, and creativity. Judges reserve the right to disqualify any entries deemed unsuitable.


Winning photos, with photographer credits, will be published in an upcoming 2018 calendar celebrating the bicentennial of our County. Winners of published photos will each receive a free calendar. Additional copies will be available for purchase. Runner up photos, with photographer credits, may be posted on our society website.


All entries must be received by December 31, 2016 at 5 p.m.

Winners will be notified via email by March 31, 2017.

By entering the contest, you convey to Jefferson County Historical Society license to publish, distribute, and publicly display the photographs submitted to this contest, (ii) the right to use the photographer’s name, city, and state of residence in promotions, publications, and (iii) the right to use the photographs for promotional and educational campaigns (with photographer photo credit). Each photographer will retain all rights to any photograph submitted including ownership if applicable, other than those listed above.
