Rowe General Mercantile Ledger

Valle mines, Missouri

1906-1910

 

Richard Hawkins Rowe was born in Valles Mines, MO on August 22, 1952 to Edward and Grace Rowe. Richard married Alida Sykes on May 10, 1876 and they had eight children. In 1898, Richard Rowe and his oldest son, Albert Philip Rowe, opened a general mercantile store at Valles Mines. They continued this operation until 1924 when A.P. Rowe purchased the business from his father who was in ill health. Richard died November 26, 1926 on a visit to St. Louis to see some of his children.

Albert and Pearl Emily Holdman were married June 12, 1907 at Herculaneum. According to Albert’s WWI draft registration, he was short with a medium build, blue eyes, and black hair. Pearl and Albert had two children and they continued serving the area with the merchandise business over a 50 year period. In addition, Albert also became postmaster of Valles Mines in 1921 and served in this capacity until he retired in 1947.

Albert & Pearl’s daughter, Evelyn, married R.W. (Pete) Snider. She took over the store, becoming the  manager and postmistress. She was still serving in that position when her father Albert died in 1970. Rowe General Mercantile can still be seen today, January 2012, behind the post office building on Highway V in Valle Mines, Jefferson County, Mo.  (background story by Lisa K. Gendron)
