In 1879, George decided to study medicine and studied under the then practicing Dr. J. E. Manis, and later that year entered the St. Louis Medical College. He graduated in 1882. He clerked in the store of Joseph J. Hoeken during the year of 1883, but soon resumed his medical practice in Hillsboro. He was elected coroner in 1884.

 

Obituary Jefferson Democrat Jan. 5, 1933

Dr. G. M. Mockbee, village doctor for Hillsboro for more, than forty years died suddenly at his home here on. Monday, January 2nd, 1933. Although he had been in falling health for some time he had been confined to his room for only a couple of days. He was born July 30, 1868, In Joachim Township, son of Robert Mockbee and wife. On Nov. 24th, 1886 he was united in marriage to Miss Jessie Green and they have lived in Hillsboro ever since with the exception of about 3 years which was spent in Poplar Bluff, Mo. The doctor was always active In business and political affairs, for many years being president of the Bank of Hillsboro, serving also in his time as Coroner, for the past ten years he had been an active member of the County Democratic Committee was County Farm and Jail Physician for a long number of years and a member of Hillsboro Special Rood District. He was a member of the Hillsboro Methodist Church also Joachim Lodge No. 164 A. F. and A. M., a great lover of outdoor sports since youth, and. a famous hunter and fisherman. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Jessie Mockbee (nee.Green) all of his immediate relatives having preceded him In death but he had a large circle of distant relatives and friends who will sincerely mourn his death. Funeral services were conducted at the family home, by Rev. Hayes, on Wednesday, January 4th at 2 p. m with interment In the Hillsboro Cemetery.
