Jefferson Democrat, FRIDAY, 8 OCTOBER 1875
James METTS, of Sandy, died last week under rather peculiar circumstances. He had chills and fever, and concluded to doctor himself. He first  took some of McLeans pills, and while the fever was at its height, and his mind doubtless deranged, he got hold of a box of Jones' ague pills, and before his wife knew what he was doing, had eaten all but three, about 25 pills in addition to the McLean pills. Dr. GAMACHE  was sent for and after he dosed him awhile, Dr. SAPPER came and tried his hand but the patient died in spite of their efforts. It is well enough to have some family remedies about the house to use in cases of ordinary and not serious sickness, but they should be kept out of the way of persons crazy with fever.  Mr. METTS was a very worthy citizen, just in the prime of life.  He leaves a wife and several small children to mourn the loss of their protector and father.

************

In 1876, his daughter and son-in-law James and Josephine Johnston's farm adjoined his, and another daughter, Catherine, who married Meinrod Reibold, lived on the next farm. All this land belonged to Gamache at one time, and he parceled it out to his daughters when they married. Although he remained healthy and active into his late years, he retired from his medical practice. In 1897, at the age of  89, he rode his horse a mile and a half to check on flood damage at the home of his son-in-law, Mr. Riebold. Near the house he fell from his horse, and died three days later from his injuries, May 8, 1897. his wife Elizabeth died 2 years later on his birthday.

Probate file #2334 Jefferson County, MO will dated September 21, 1894

Heirs: sons Francis, Jerome, Elias, daughters Euphrosyne Robert, Josephine Johnston, Catharine Reibold.  He states in this will that his sons Jerome and Elias are presumed dead.

In the file is a statement from the War Department, dated ~after~ Louis's death, saying that "The records on file in this office show that Elias, Jerome, and John Gamache were privates in Company F, 2d Missouri Infantry, CSA and that Elias was killed May 16, 1863, at the battle of Baker's Creek; that Jerome was missing in battle at Corinth, and supposed to have been killed, and that John died July 10 1862, at Camp Priceville, Mississippi." This article was sent to Louis P. Robert, husband of Euphrosyne, daughter of Louis. They were probably looking for confirmation of the boys deaths in order to divide the estate.
